Transfer domain to another provider

What does transferring a domain mean?

Transferring a domain means changing the registrar (who manages the domain registration) from one provider to another. This changes who charges for renewals and who has administrative control of the domain.

Prerequisites

Before transferring a domain, you need:

  • ✅ The domain must be more than 60 days old since registration or last transfer
  • ✅ The domain must not be locked or in transfer period
  • ✅ The authorization code (auth code / EPP code) from the current domain
  • ✅ Access to the domain's admin email
  • ✅ The domain must not be expired or about to expire

Step 1: Unlock the domain

  • Log in to your current registrar's panel
  • Look for the Transfer Lock, Registrar Lock, or Transfer Lock option
  • Disable the lock if it's active
  • Save the changes

Note: Some registrars require the domain to be unlocked for at least 24 hours before transfer.

Step 2: Get the authorization code

  • In your current registrar's panel, look for the transfer section
  • Look for the Auth Code, EPP Code, Authorization Code, or Transfer Code option
  • Click Get Code or Obtener código
  • The code will be sent by email or shown on screen
  • Save this code securely

Note: The code is usually 6 to 16 alphanumeric characters.

Step 3: Start transfer at new provider

  • Log in to the new provider's panel where you want to transfer the domain
  • Look for the Transfer Domain or Transferir Dominio option
  • Enter the name of the domain you want to transfer
  • Enter the authorization code you obtained
  • Complete the payment process (transfer usually includes 1 additional year of registration)

Step 4: Approve the transfer

After starting the transfer, you'll receive a confirmation email at the domain's admin address:

  • Check your email (including spam folder)
  • Look for email from the new provider or registrar
  • Click the approval link
  • Confirm the transfer

Note: You have limited time (usually 5-7 days) to approve the transfer. If you don't approve it, the transfer will be automatically cancelled.

Step 5: Wait for transfer

The transfer process can take:

  • Minimum: 1-2 days
  • Average: 3-5 days
  • Maximum: 7 days

During this time:

  • The domain will continue working normally
  • You won't be able to make changes to the domain until it completes
  • You'll receive email notifications about the status

Common issues

I can't get the authorization code

  • Verify that the domain is unlocked
  • Contact your current registrar's support
  • Some registrars require additional verification

Authorization code doesn't work

  • Verify that you copied the complete code without spaces
  • Make sure the code hasn't expired
  • Verify that the domain is unlocked
  • Contact the new provider if the problem persists

Transfer is rejected

  • Verify that the domain meets requirements (more than 60 days, not locked, etc.)
  • Check that the admin email is correct
  • Verify that you approved the transfer on time
  • Contact the new provider's support

I don't receive confirmation email

  • Check spam folder
  • Verify that the domain's admin email is correct
  • Contact the new provider to resend the email
  • Verify that the domain is not in WHOIS privacy (may hide the email)

Cancel a transfer

If you need to cancel a transfer in process:

  • Contact the new provider immediately
  • If not yet approved, simply don't approve the email
  • If already approved, the new provider can cancel it if you contact in time

Important tips

  • ⚠️ Backup: Backup your DNS configuration before transferring
  • ⚠️ Email: Make sure you have access to the admin email
  • Timing: Do the transfer when you don't have critical pending changes
  • Verification: Verify that the new provider supports your domain type
  • Prices: Compare renewal prices before transferring

What happens to DNS during transfer?

During the transfer:

  • Nameservers and DNS records are generally maintained
  • Your website will continue working normally
  • After transfer, you can change nameservers if you want

Note: If you change nameservers during transfer, it can cause problems. It's better to wait until it completes.
